Indian woman drowns in Jumeirah in Dubai under mysterious circumstances

A young Indian woman drowns while learning diving at Jumeirah coast in Dubai

DUBAI: An Indian woman aged 24 drowned while learning underwater diving in Dubai last week. The incident took place at Jumeirah in Dubai on Thursday.

According to reports, the incident took place around 7 pm. The trainer told the police that he went underwater with the trainee woman and three others and while they were diving he saw the woman removing her oxygen mask. He said she stopped him when he tried to put it back on her face, reports Khaleej Times. He said she was found struggling for breath under the sea. He explained that he tried to use the life jacket to make her float.

The trainer said the woman was breathing when brought out of the water and he gave first aid. Thereafter she was taken to hospital, where she was declared dead.

The police claim that it was an accident. The body has been sent for post- mortem examination.

Aarushi Singh, 24, a student of chartered accountancy in Mumbai, had come to Dubai on August 15 on a holiday. She had her uncle, aunt and cousin in Dubai to stay with. Her mother has arrived and they plan to take the body to India, Prateek Singh, the woman’s uncle, told Gulf News. Aarushi Singh was the only child of Paresh Singh and Neeta Singh. Her father came to Dubai on August 18 and had accompanied Aarushi who wanted to learn scuba diving. However, Aarushi Singh's father was not on shore at the time of the mishap.

The water was murky unlike in Fujairah which is better known for scuba diving. Moreover, one instructor was engaged to manage four first-timers, especially when the water had poor visibility. Beginners need to study and go for classes before hitting the water. Checking of a diving company' reputation is essential.

The incident happened at Jumeirah 3. Jumeirah, an upper middle class residential area and a tourist hub on Dubai coast, is divided into three segments - Jumeirah 1, 2, and 3. Jumeirah 2 is the costliest place in Dubai. It is frequented by expatriates. Since pearl business here is age-old, the port is known for trade, and diving has therefore been a way of life. Jumeirah has since become a 'brand' also.
